چکیده

Cool stars are known to produce flares probably as a result of magnetic reconnection in their outer atmospheres. We present simultaneous XMM-Newton optical V band and X-ray observations of the M8 dwarf LP 412-31. During the observation a giant flare occurred, with an optical amplitude of 6 mag and total energy of 3 · 10 32 erg in each the V band and soft X-rays. Both flare onset and flare decay were completely covered in both wavebands with a temporal resolution of 20 s, allowing for a determination of the flare time scales as well as a study of the temperature evolution of the flaring plasma. The data are consistent with an impulsive energy release followed by radiative cooling without further energy release during the decay phase. Our analysis suggests that the optical flare originates from a small fraction of the surface of LP 412-31, while the characteristic scale size of the flaring X-ray plasma is of the order of the stellar radius or larger. The absence of any small-scale variability in the light curve suggests a non-standard flare number energy distribution.

The Giant X-Ray Flare of NGC 5905: Tidal Disruption of a Star, a Brown Dwarf, or a Planet?

We model the 1990 giant X-ray flare of the quiescent galaxy NGC 5905 as the tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole. From the observed rapid decline of the luminosity, over a timescale of a few years, we argue that the flare was powered by the fallback of debris rather than subsequent accretion via a thin disk. The fallback model allows constraints to be set on the black hole ma...

Simultaneous Multiwavelength Observations of Magnetic Activity in Ultracool

We present multi-epoch simultaneous radio, optical, Hα, UV, and X-ray observations of the active, young, low-mass binary NLTT 33370AB (blended spectral type M7e). This system is remarkable for its extreme levels of magnetic activity: it is the most radio-luminous ultracool dwarf (UCD) known, and here we show that it is also one of the most X-ray luminous UCDs known. We detect the system in all ...

A Chandra X-ray detection of the L dwarf binary Kelu-1 Simultaneous Chandra and Very Large Array observations

Context. Magnetic activity in ultracool dwarfs, as measured in X-rays and Hα, shows a steep decline after spectral type M7-M8. So far, no L dwarf has been detected in X-rays. In contrast, L dwarfs may have higher radio activity than M dwarfs. Aims. We observe L and T dwarfs simultaneously in X-rays and radio to determine their level of magnetic activity in the context of the general decline of ...

Chandra DETECTION OF AN X-RAY FLARE FROM THE BROWN DWARF LP 944-20

We have detected a bright X-ray flare from the nearby (d =5.0 pc) brown dwarf LP 944-20 with the Chandra/ACIS-S. This is an old (500 Myr), rapidly rotating, lithium-bearing M9 object, with a bolometric luminosity of ≈ 6×1029 erg sec−1. It was only detected by Chandra during an X-ray flare of duration 1-2 hours near the end of a 12.1 hour observation. The peak X-ray luminosity was 1.2+0.5 −0.3×1...
